Nikopolis in Epiros, the city of victory, stands on the neck of the peninsula dividing the Ambraciot Gulf from the Ionian Sea, opposite Actium and 6 km. north of Preveza. The city was founded to commemorate the result of the Battle of Actium, a naval encounter fought off Actium on 2 September 31 BC, in which Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus, who later took the name Augustus, defeated the fleet of Marcus Antonius and Cleopatra VI, the queen of Egypt.
